Will the NHS receive a pay rise in 2024?

After months of delays and debates, the government has accepted the recommendations of the NHS Pay Review Body (NHS PRB.) It has been agreed that there will be a 5.5% increase for nurses and NHS workers that will also be backdated to 1st April.

No matter band you are working at, as an NHS nurse, your salary will increase by 5.5%.

Current pay scales per band

The NHS pay bands range from Band 1 to Band 9, with each band having different levels of experience, seniority and qualifications- these bands are how NHS Nurses salaries are calculated. These changes will be introduced in October 1st 2024, until then the current band salaries will remain.

How much will NHS pensions increase?

NHS pensions are subject to an increase every year. The annual pension increase is based on the consumer price index (CPI) as laid down by HM Treasury every year. The 2024 increase will be 6.7%, and another uplift will be implemented at the beginning of April 2025, ready for the new tax year.

It is also worth noting that if the cost of living goes down, your pension will not be reduced.

What will my new salary be?

You can work out an average for your new salary using an online calculator. Your new salary will be based of what band you work in and how much experience you have had.

For example:

  • A band 4 Nurse with 3 years of experience will increase from £27,696 to £29,114.

  • A band 6 Nurse with 2-15 years of experience will increase from £37,350 to £39,404.

You can find an average of the new NHS Pay Bands online.

Will there be a slump payment for NHS staff in 2024?

In 2023, NHS staff received a slump payment that would help them cover costs during the cost of living crisis. Now that inflation is back down to 2.2%, there will be no additional one-off payments this year.

When will it be implemented

We are expecting NHS workers to receive their pay rises in October 2024, as well as any backpay due to April 1st 2024. The NHS Pay Review Body will then review again in April 2025.
