The Role:

  • We are seeking a dedicated Housing Assessment and Lettings Officer to join Brent Council. The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Registering and assessing new housing applicants under relevant housing legislation.
  • Conducting home visits and organizing medical assessments for applicants.
  • Notifying applicants of their housing assessment priority.
  • Managing and administering existing housing applications.
  • Supporting the choice-based lettings service by prioritizing applicants for viewings/offers.
  • Handling customer inquiries related to housing applications and lettings.
  • Organizing the advertisement of available properties.
  • Contributing to the Council's objectives for making the best use of its housing stock.

Job Purpose:

  • Investigate and assess all households applying for housing under the Housing Act 1985 and Housing Act 1996 (Part VI). Responsibilities include registering new and general housing applicants, undertaking verifications such as home visits and organizing medical assessments, notifying applicants of their housing assessment priority, and managing and administering existing applications.
  • Support the management and administration of the choice-based lettings service, including prioritization of applicants for viewings/offers, dealing with customer inquiries, and organizing property advertisements.
  • Contribute to meeting the Council's best use of its stock objectives and manage applicants' expectations for social housing.

The Candidate

  • The ideal candidate will have previous experience in a similar role and possess:
  • A good standard of literacy and numeracy.
  • Knowledge of core legislation such as the Housing Act 1985, Housing Act 1996 (Part VI), Homelessness Act 2002, Localism Act 2011, and Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.
  • An understanding of supply and demand issues related to social housing in an inner London Local Authority.
  • Familiarity with legislation and best practices related to the letting of social housing and the use of choice-based lettings systems.
  • Strong organizational and customer service skills.
  • The ability to manage and prioritize a busy workload effectively.
